Will Games Do the Evolution… Baby?

By EJ Afzelius

Love Pearl Jam, and these lyrics just seemed appropriate for the thoughts swilling in my maladjusted brain. What does the future of gaming hold? Well, I believe it holds a lot. It holds so much that the future’s stubby gigantic fingers are having trouble containing all the awesome that is coming. Since the future can’t keep everything contained forever, little bits and pieces are already making themselves known to the public. Cloud gaming, mobile and casual gaming, 3D LEDs, all of these are pointing the way forward. It’s pointless talking about the future if we’re just going to stick to 2012. C’mon, that’s just a little over 3 months away. 10 years from now though, or maybe even 15… man, in my head? It couldn’t be sweeter.

The technology will continue to improve, and that’s a given. But it’s not going to rely on graphics hardware anymore. This is the reason why a new generation console hasn’t hit after more than five years of the Wii, 360, and PS3. I compare the visual state of gaming to that of movies. Things already look fantastic, and we’re still going to see improvement on that front, but it’s not where the evolution lies.

I got the idea reading up on battery technology. Eventually, whether it’s because of using air and not chemicals, recharging wirelessly through signal clouds, or using tiny versions of nuclear plants, The fact is, these portavices will be capable of so much that they will be at the forefront of the changes in gaming. We already saw demos of iPhones being used as controllers connected to the iPad. These devices will eventually take the place of consoles altogether. Less material cost, cheaper to produce, and ultimate connectivity. If charging will be wireless, connecting to TV’s or hologram projectors will be wireless too. Just tap one device to another and the connection will be made. We’re already seeing that with some smartphones today. Who knows, the portavice itself will be the projector as well. If 10MP cameras are being shoved into tiny @ss cases, why not projectors. Those things are getting tinier and tinier anyway. We will also see a rapid increase in pedestrian and road accidents, and it will be worth it!using mobile gadgets will be even more efficient, reliable, and uncomplicated compared to today. No more wires, and little to no charging between very long periods equals very happy techy boys. And Istill say mobile gadgets because I’m not sure what to call these future portavices. Wait, portavice, I think I’ll stick to that ‘til somebody thinks up something better. And that’s portable devices, not portable vices you sickos. I’m not talking about flesh lights here, although those will be pretty high-tech too… Still, phones? Smartphones even? Just don’t cut it. Why does the phone element outshine the camera, vid cam and computer aspects? Anyway, that’s a discussion in my head for another time.

As for the games themselves, the social and casual aspects of gaming these days will also evolve. Sure, you’ll still have the swipe and cut and the swipe and throws to draw in more noobs into the fray, but as we saw with Zynga’s new Adventure World, current casual gamers are being tutored into playing more nuanced games. Not that Adventure World is suddenly Tomb Raider, but 10 years from now? It’s going to be like a zombie apocalypse. The spread of gaming addiction will be so quick and unstoppable, we’re going to be surrounded. Well, I already am surrounded, but I mean other circles will be too.

Everything will be in the clouds as well, all kinds of data or content. Gone will be the days of discs or even keeping files on personal hard drives. Everything will be streamed, further lessening the cost. Although that’s somewhat being done now, again it’ll be wireless in a few years. So it’s pretty much, grab your portavice, tap it on the table, a hologram pops up, and you choose the game you want streamed into your living room, basement, side street, main thoroughfare or wherever you want to play. And those Bluetooth headsets will be implanted into your brains so huzzah for multiplayer! Not a single wire in sight either so less OCD suicides. Motion control? Yeah, in the portavice too. Everything’s going to be in one little device powered forever.

Something happened down there.
