Tukko Rating – Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego

By William Bernard

Carmen Sandiego; For our younger readers, this name might not mean a whole lot, but for those of us who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, the name is bound to bring a grin to your face with memories of intrigue and global adventure. Indeed, where in the World is Carmen Sandiego has been a question plaguing youngsters and adults alike since she first appeared in the mid 80’s. Ever one step ahead, the elusive master thief has brought many to their knees in their attempts to capture her. Having seemingly disappeared from the scene since the popular PBS television show in the mid 90’s, Carmen Sandiego has finally made a triumphant return, this time across Facebook, and once again begs the question – where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

The premise of the game is the same as most of us remember it – You play a detective of A.C.M.E, and are tasked with recovering stolen goods from around the world from the thieves of V.I.L.E. You begin in the city where the item in question was stolen, and by talking to the locals, gather clues as to the thief’s destination and their identity. Once you think you know the thief’s next location, you can fly over there and repeat the process again. Picking the wrong destination means a lengthy backtracking process, while success leads you closer to the culprit.

Alongside the thief’s destination, you will also gain clues as to their identity, including features such as hair color, eye color, and such which can then be cross-referenced in a database. Once you have identified enough features to make a solid ID, you can print out an arrest warrant. By both successfully identifying the thief and tracking them down, you will be able to recover the stolen item and gain experience.

The educational value of the game is as solid as ever, and it’s great fun to learn about the different cities you visit as you attempt to catch crooks and recover valuable artifacts. The younger generation may not appreciate it as much however, in today’s day and age of the internet and Wikipedia. Socially, the game has integrated itself well into Facebook, allowing you to ask your friends for help on solving clues and even having them join with you on your international manhunts. Visually and aurally, the game is simple yet functional. The previous games weren’t flashy at all, but they worked very well. The same is the case here.

There’s definitely a nostalgia factor at play with this game, but even without it, the game is still solid fun. There’s definitely something timeless about Carmen Sandiego, and it’s great to see the game making its modern day debut on a platform as accessible, and global, as Facebook. The game stays true to the original formula, and absolutely nothing is lost in the translation. Carmen Sandiego is as fun today as it was back then. For the 80’s and 90’s kids, this is definitely one to check out and walk down memory lane, while for those of a younger generation, there is still much that Carmen Sandiego can teach.
