Maple Story Adventures is a light hearted, MMO-Lite Facebook game from Nexon. A spin-off of their enormously popular MMOG Maple Story, Maple Story Adventures condenses the basic formula of the game into a single player experience with added social elements. The game is surprisingly entertaining with a large amount of depth, despite the repetitive nature of the combat, but whether or not it has any real staying power in the already crowded and competitive Facebook gaming space remains to be seen.

Maple Story Adventures shares the same graphical style as its bigger MMOG brother. Maple Story has a wonderful cutsie 2D art aesthetic, with lots of bright colors and small details that one can’t help but smile at. You start off the game by selecting a class, either a warrior or a magician. Apart from the aesthetics, they really aren’t much different from each other (unlike in traditional MMOG’s) which is a little disappointing. Even the equipment is generally the same between the two. It would have been much more interesting if each class had their own different play-styles and specializations.

Once your character is created, you can start doing quests which will introduce you to the different game mechanics as well as the various areas of the game. A majority of these quests are simple kill X number of Y quests, and is probably the bulk of the game. This can be a little repetitive for some since attacking enemies is a simple affair of clicking. There are other types of quests however such as crafting and material gathering, so this adds a bit of variety to the gameplay. There’s a wide variety of loot and rewards to be gained however, and this also helps keeps things fresh. It’s always motivating to see yourself decking your character out over time with better and better gear.

The game isn’t particularly deep at first glance – most of the gameplay revolves around travelling from area to area, completing quests and then moving on to the next area. However despite this, the game remains interesting and compelling. Whether or not the game has any true “end game” like any proper MMOG still needs to be seen, so it’s difficult to say how much staying power the game has at this point in time.

Socially, the game allows you to hire your friends to help you on quests, as well as the customary gift sharing. But this is as far as it goes. Clearly the game is an upsell for player’s to move to the full Maple Story game.

Overall, Maple Story Adventures is a fun, if not particularly lasting single player adventure through Facebook. Eventually, those who stick with the game may be interested to try out Maple Story proper, and this seems like the clear way the designers were thinking. There’s no reason players can’t jump straight away to Maple Story, but for those still on the fence, Maple Story Adventures is a good introduction to the game and a decent enough game on its own, perfect for those quick coffee break adventures during a long day.
