Outsourced Applied Dreaming

By EJ Afzelius

I’m a big fan of new comedies, and this latest season is no different. From the title, you may deduce that I’m going to talk a little about the Indian outsourcing series “Outsourced.” Unless you suck at deduction, or don’t watch TV at all, Good job Sherlock. This series perfectly demonstrates what many Americans know about outsourcing, and that is it’s all done in India. While India’s 1 billion strong population could very well deal with all of the United State’s outsourcing needs, it doesn’t. Other countries supply this demand as well, and one of them is the Philippines. The small Asian country provides a variety of services in this aspect, and last weekend I was pleasantly surprised to learn that gaming is one of them. Enter Dreamlords Digital.

I had a nice chat with Dreamlords Digital CEO, Creative Director, and all around lord of the geeks Russell Tomas last Saturday, and the gist of it is, they’re heeeeeeeere (you seen Poltergeist? Awesome movie…). With the release of their fun smartphone app Zombie fields, Dreamlords Digital has arrived, and hopefully they’re here to stay. ‘Cause I gotta say, I saw the projects they got lined up, and they’re some pretty exciting things going on, especially for a small company in the Philippines. If Zombie Fields is any indication (a game we’re all having a blast with here at Tukko), the rest of these projects are totally worth getting into, especially Graywalkers, a supernatural Fallout like post apocalyptic mmo shooter. More on that next time, but dear Lord I pray Dreamlords gets the financing to complete the game.

And why shouldn’t they? The young energetic CEO inspired much confidence in the ability of his company to supply one’s needs in all areas of gaming, from development to publishing and beyond. Development wise, Russell’s got a crack team working with the Unity engine. For those unfamiliar, this engine is behind a slew of awesome PC Iphone, Android, and Online games. Soon, the Unity engine will be compatible with the current consoles as well. The Dreamlords are keeping their collective eye on the former set of gaming devices though, mastering their craft before possibly expanding.

Speaking of Dreamlords, I was curious about the name and Russell told me the reason for it. The short of it is, Dreamlords Digital was cooked up to serve as a platform for making their dream game ideas a reality. Every single peon, I mean employee, in DLD is an avid gamer, with many having their own grand schemes for the games they want to give life. With the quality of their current projects, I’d say they’ve got some ok ideas… I’m kidding Rus, there’s some really exciting stuff in there.

Among these projects is a modern combat tactical RPG called Warband Tactics, an MMOFPS called Warband, a DOTA-like action RPG called Isles of Destiny (the sample art looked promising), and they’ve even got a military combat simulator being developed for military programs around the world (wait, is this classified? I don’t want to die…). Again, pretty impressive stuff, but this is just half the battle.

The other half of DLDs resources is devoted to publishing and game process outsourcing, the latter being what they would like to push to international clients. So let me just clear my throat for a bit. Zynga, Namco Bandai, Activision, and Electronic Arts, listen up! The dreamlords of the Philippines are for hire and they got what you need. Game mastering, community management, game advertising, game dev support, name it and the service shall be provided, and for a reasonable price.

How reasonable? Half what you’re paying your people now! Kidding, don’t know s#!+ about DLDs fees. But since you’re a rich investor (‘cause that’s the kind of person who reads my stuff) who’s obviously interested in feeding the mouths of DLDs peons, you can contact Mr. Tomas at russelltomas@dreamlordsdigital.com. You’re welcome Russell. Now how about that game I was pitching you. We start in a magical forest- don’t you dare roll your eyes at me… it’s not cliché! Sigh…
