It’s awesome being a gamer in this age of ever improving technology. Only now do we get a fantasy simulation so immersive that you won’t mind just exploring for hours, merely killing a mudcrab or a wolf every few minutes. Damn you Skyrim. Only technology made today can create such beautiful vistas of graphical gorgeousness. Feel like soaking in the great outdoors but nature’s a little too far away? Gaming can fix that for you (somewhat). Too bad smellovision didn’t have a future, but maybe
you can keep smelling a potted plant while harvesting some nirnroot.
It’s also only now that the cinematic quality of film can be seen in games in excellent form. The Uncharted series constantly displays this with every release. I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s said, “holy c*&@, it’s like I’m playing a movie!” So yeah, you could say that currently, the entertainment value of our treasured hobby is through the roof? So what the hell is up with that f#*@%$! negative title? Depending on where you’re standing, you may be able to catch a glimpse of a possible dark age in gaming filled with smirking helmeted pigs, various similarly titled tower defense games, and lots of pinching and swyping.
You know you’re screwed when you finally get the portable gaming device you’ve been dreaming about and it sells way less compared to inferior offerings. Yeah, I’m talking about the PS Vita. Who knew it would underperform so badly that in comparison, the 3DS launch could be seen as a roaring success? Of course one could argue that the Vita’s exclusive titles have yet to hit, and maybe we’ll see an inflow of revenue then. But think about this. Five years ago, before smartphones and tablets were glued to the hands of the masses, would the Vita be in the same boat? I wager probably not.
The 3DS may seem to be printing money now, even when compared to first year DS sales, but that’s attributed mainly to a huge price drop only a few months after the system’s debut. Never in gaming system history has such a marketing move ever been made. Maybe the Vita needs to do the same, but then Sony would increment significant losses. That is not a cheap@&$ portable to make folks and what’s the point of selling something if you’re not going to see profit in the near future? Sony has tough decisions to make.
Ok, I may have jumped the gun. The future isn’t bleak… yet. There‘s still awesome gaming to be had in the horizon. You have to admit though, that it is more than a little troubling that such high tech devices are starting to falter. The Vita launched without much fanfare. Are we going to see the same happen to the 720 and the PS4? PC gaming certainly took a hit when consoles took over. Now, we’re starting to see the chink in our console’s armor. We can see that the industry has noticed as well. How can you explain that #ugly WiiU controller? Will social touch based games completely take over? There are so many questions and only the future holds any real answers. One can only hope these analyses are wrong. Damn all that Mayan calendar crap, this is the real apocalypse.
